People experiencing mental health and psychosocial difficulties are more likely to die earlier than the general population due to physical illnesses, according to a recent statement from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW, 2020).
While the link between mental and physical health is well known, the development of physical illnesses is complex, influenced by many biological, social and environmental factors in each of our lives.
A common consensus from professional bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) is that the physical health of those experiencing mental illness is often overlooked, or worse, minimised despite these known impacts, particularly side effects for commonly prescribed medications.
So what CAN be done to help improve (and in some cases, prevent) these mental illnesses? Diet.
Diet has recently been recognised by RANZCP as a modifiable factor for the treatment and prevention of mental illnesses, described as 'essentially non-negotiable' and as the foundation of treatment for mood disorders (RANZCP, 2020)
Feeding Moods' vision is to reduce the gap in physical illness and life expectancy experienced by individuals impacted by mental health and disability through improvements in modifiable lifestyle factors and dietary quality.
